In 1969, God brought together three young men, students at Olivet Nazarene College, in Bourbonnais, Illinois to form the Helmsmen. Since this early formation, God has used The Helmsmen to minister to thousands of people, through hundreds of church services and concerts. Many people were saved and many more were encouraged to continue in their Christian faith.

Many changes have occurred over the years, including personnel and location changes. Since 2007, the Helmsmen have ministered throughout southwest Michigan and northern Indiana.

The Helmsmen of southwest Michigan have recorded several CDs, including their newest one “Did You Ask God” released in the summer of 2025. This CD features several songs written by members of the group, including the title song.

Together, The Helmsmen lead a worship service using a variety of musical styles ranging from old time hymns to lively Southern Gospel songs. The concert is rich in professionalism but exalts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
